Tata AIA eases wellness targets for insurance rewards

The insurer has added Health Connect integration to track heart rate and activity.

Tata AIA Life Insurance has relaunched its Vitality wellness programme in India, lowering the daily step target for earning rewards and expanding benefits to encourage customers to adopt healthier habits.

The programme, first introduced in India in 2022, combines health tracking, wellness rewards and insurance premium discounts.

The relaunch places greater emphasis on longevity, with members able to earn points from 5,000 daily steps, down from 7,500 previously.

Tata AIA said the programme is based on research suggesting that sustained healthy habits could add up to five years to life expectancy. Individual outcomes may vary.

The five-year estimate draws on Vitality UK research involving about 465,000 members over seven years. Peer-reviewed by the London School of Economics, the study found that people who moved from an inactive to an active lifestyle could reduce their risk of death by up to 57%.

The research also found that members who were active for just one or two days a week could gain more than two years of life expectancy.

Tata AIA said its longevity approach also considers health risks associated with physical inactivity, poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption and sleep.

It cited research sources including the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Indian Institute of Science, the World Health Organisation and the National Library of Medicine.

The programme rewards members for activities such as walking, exercise and health checks. Members progress through four status tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum — based on the points they earn.

At renewal, their Vitality Status determines the premium discounts they can receive. The company did not specify the discount rates in its announcement.

Members can also access discounts on sportswear, footwear, fitness wearables and gym memberships through partners including Decathlon, Puma, Google, FitPass and cult.fit.

Other changes include integration with Health Connect to improve the tracking of steps, heart rate and other health data.

The programme also offers Vitality Age, which compares a member’s estimated body age with their actual age to help track changes in health-related habits.

The updated offering is designed to make participation easier by lowering the step target and providing rewards for healthy activities, alongside longer-term incentives through premium discounts.
