Universal Sompo flags cardiac claims surge from India’s smaller cities

Claims from Tier 3 cities continue to account for a significant share of claims outside metro areas.

Cardiac claims from non-metropolitan locations in India have risen over the past three financial years, according to data from Universal Sompo General Insurance.

Claims from Tier 2 cities have more than doubled over the three-year period, whilst claims from Tier 3 cities continue to account for a significant share of Universal Sompo General Insurance’s claims outside metropolitan areas, according to an announcement on 29 September 2026.

Universal Sompo General Insurance did not specify the exact figures of the claims.

“We are seeing cardiac care needs increasingly emerge from smaller cities and towns, reflecting the changing healthcare landscape in India,” said Varsha Gujarathi, chief customer officer, Universal Sompo General Insurance.

The insurer noted that cardiac conditions involve ongoing treatment and healthcare expenditure. Treatment costs can range from approximately 1 to 12 lakh for coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty, bypass surgery, or aortic valve replacement.

Universal Sompo is a joint venture of Indian Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Karnataka Bank, Dabur Investments, and a global insurer SOMPO.
